Asia - Broadband - Development of Power Line Services The development and deployment of Broadband over Powerlines (BPL) systems and services in Asia has been patchy to say the least. The high technology market leaders in the region, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, have been running pilot systems and trials of various kinds. But there is little evidence of any major commercial roll-out of BPL, apart from one significant deployment reported in Hong Kong. Whilst research into the technology is proceeding, there does not yet appear to be any strong commitment to any large scale operations at an early stage. This report looks at activities associated with BPL development across the Asian region.

Asia - Broadband - Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Services DSL technology has been playing a significant role in Asia as the broadband Internet access platform of choice for some years now. It has made obvious good use of the incumbents' copper networks; constant improvements in technology have allowed DSL to reach more customers and provide more reliable service. However, in the last year or two we have seen the start of a migration away from DSL to fibre-based services as the market looks to ever increasing speeds. So far this trend is only evident in the developed markets - South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Much of the region is still embracing DSL. This report provides a regional overview of the DSL market together with some relevant statistics.

Asia - Broadband - Fibre to the Home (FttH) Asia is the one region in the world where FttH has started to emerge as a serious broadband platform. The technology has taken off in a big way in Japan. There were already over 11 million FttH subscribers in Japan by early 2008. Not unexpectedly, the movement towards fibre has been occurring in Asia's more developed markets, where positive government intervention has been playing an important role. However, the adoption rates have varied considerably from market to market. Invariably, FttH has found itself competing with the copper loop as technology continues to extend the capability of this traditional technology. This report presents an overview of the Asian FttH market.

Asia - Broadband - Market Overview Broadband Internet is one of the fastest growing market segments in Asia. In fact, the region has been leading the world. However, broadband has remained a phenomenon limited to Asia's developed economies, with dial-up narrowband access still being the norm in the developing countries of Asia, although there are signs that this is changing. Where the market is taking off, both DSL and cable modem platforms have both proved popular, with DSL having had a clear advantage. While DSL has been dominating the world market, Asia has become the leading market in the world for DSL, with 38% of the worldwide broadband subscriber base and about 38% of the world's DSL subscribers. This report offers an overview of the Asian broadband market.

Asia - Broadband - Wireless Services The deployment of wireless broadband Internet systems and services in Asia has started to gather pace. After a tentative start, a range of wireless broadband technology platforms are being rolled out or are being planned in the various regional markets. One challenge for wireless broadband continues to be the establishing of viable business models. Not unexpectedly, the high technology markets in the region - Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore - have been leading the way. There were an estimated 70,000 WiFi hotspots across the region by early 2008. The big interest, however, is in mobile WiMAX and mobile variations on that platform. This report looks at the development of wireless broadband in Asia and its major markets.
